Ralph Sauer sent this to me:

Norm,
I thought you would like to read the following response (from a Trombone List) to a question about the combasso---

I suffer sitting next to a cimbasso(or catastraphone)for more time than I care to think about. It is basically a valve bass trombone in 'F'.It originates from the period when valve trombones were popular, but has expanded in bore to become the scud missile of the low brass section. It usually has five valves,to give the unfortunate player lots of choices for playing notes out of tune.It is often used in film music these days-often giving voice to the internal problems of large, long dead creatures.Makes the contra-bassoon seem musical.
