It could be that the original bottom bow cap was discarded when some deep dents were removed--it's difficult to get the cap to fit after this has been done and lots of shops don't bother.

You might be able thave a custom one made. I was chatting with a fellow who is into restoring classic autos about the old tuba he had recently purchased. He was wondering how one would remove dents from the bell. I explained the business about a dent machine and his eyes lit up and he said "That sounds like an English wheel". Turns out he's got one of those beasts and can actually do things like make his own fenders--or bow guards.

So if you can find a good antique car restoration outfit, you might be able to persuade them to run you up a guard for your horn.

Just a thought, at any rate.
