I find that it helps to tie a cloth handkerchief to my thumb ring so that my thumb has a little padding to protect it.
Once when I was in college I played my old King bell-front tuba for too long while standing up and supporting part of its weight with my thumb and lost all feeling in the thumb for a couple of weeks. Not good.
