It was mentioned to me that the big Conn 2XJs were originally equipped with a tuning bit, as were most old big Martins. When played with the bit like the horns were designed the 3rd partial then plays in tune. Perhaps the bit becomes an extension of the leadpipe, providing less of a taper. Maybe someone with some bits and a tuner and a 2XJ could do a test of this. Tune a Bb without a bit and see how low F is, then add a bit, retune Bb and then check the F to see if it is better in tune. Then add a second bit and see what happens.
