I'm still trying to decide if I should go to grad school next year or take a year off of that track to get a degree in instrument repair. Anyway, this past weekend I had a lesson with John Stevens, who said that at Madison there's an instrument repair tech who will hire students (usually untrained ones). My question is, how common is this? If I went to a school that didn't offer me a teaching assistantship, would I be able to pay off most of my tuition (I know, depends on the school, I'm from Minnesota, so at least at the Wisconsin schools I would get in-state tuition) working at such a job?
