I had a very good experience with Soutwest Airlines when I shipped my tuba via their AirFreight service. Cost $80 from Salt Lake City, Utah to Austin, Texas, and it arrived in great shape. They were totally professional and actually seemed to care about getting the horn to its destination in one piece.
But this was before September 11, so take my input with a grain of salt.
