The first tuba that I played on was an old Eb Symphony tuba. This was a Czech horn and actually played pretty well with the little Herco "Eb" mouthpiece that came with it. Occasionally I played on a Conn lady-face Eb as well, (it was shinier and used in performances only). I still think it's a good idea to start younger students on Eb. When I switched to to BBb in eighth grade the school had an Olds 0-99 and a Reynolds that was identical. Those two models were GREAT for high schools and it's a pity they're not made anymore. I did toot a few notes on my brother's school issued King sousaphone. That instrument was remarkable in that despite years of abuse, (and I mean abuse) it still played great.
