We teach the kids to play correctly first and foremost. The Marching Band is an extention of the concert program, and it would not be succesful without first rate instruction. Can't speak for the masses, but in my world, I know they get the right message. Even the redneck audiences get exposure to classical music that they would normally not hear if they didnt see the halftime show. I don't agree with forced marching band to a certain degree. I know students that are on the football team and are not in the band program because they dont play in the marching band as a requirement. This is silly. Violinists have to be in marching band to be in orchestra? This is stupid also. But if you are in the band, your teacher should be able to inspire you enough to see that a successfull marching band will help you get stronger as a musician. Don't knock the activity too much.
