I believe that "routine" can be the enemy. Every time I settle into a practice routine, no matter how much improvement it brings me in the first week, I start to lose ground in the second week. When it becomes a routine I no longer need to concentrate and when I stop concentrating I stop learning. The solution is to work hard on something for a few days and then work hard on something entirely different, in a different place, with a different tuba, with a different ensemble, etc.
