I've played a top-action BBb Beuscher and found it to be a very nice-playing horn with a great sound.
Of course, the problem with any 1917 tuba is the condition of the valves. If the ones on your band director's horn are too leaky for you to get a good idea of how the thing plays, a BBS poster once suggested fishing reel lube as a way to tighten them up a bit.
