You're right, you use more air for low notes, but at a slower air speed. thick current, slow speed. High notes are, thinner current, faster speed. But then, you can also use a thickish air current for high notes if you want it to sound more symphonic. You can play around with this aspect of playing to get different tone colors, I suppose. But this one thing applies to anybodies playing, more air doesn't necesserily mean faster air speed.
