Just reporting a recent concert I went to while on holiday in the UK.
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra played a concert in Stirling, which is about 40 miles
north of Glasgow .They included the VW tuba concerto with soloist CHRIS McSHANE, who is
their principal tuba. It was fantastic - the best live performance I've heard yet.
The hall was pretty dead but Chris coped with that brilliantly and really made the
thing sing - great sound & technique.I think it was recorded for BBC radio.
Chris seems like a really nice, humble ,down to earth kind of guy too.
He said that he really admires the American players and had been invited to come out to
Boston for the BSO semi-finals but would be unable to be there.Probably just as well for
the other finalists I'd say !!!
Anyway,it was an enjoyable & musical account and the rest of the concert was interesting
as well.A good orchestra too, very neat with a strong brass section.
Worth listening out for in their new Nielsen cycle with Osmo Vanska.
By the way, has Mr McShane ever played solo over here ??
