The consistency of Conn in nomenclature has been documented, and I thought the catalog pages I had were from 1937 - I'll have to look them up when I get caught-up in the shop - about 30 years from now. . . .
I know that I had a Conn 34J from 1935, which had 4-top-pistons and a detachable bell. Someone sent me copies of pages from a Conn catalog of that general time frame, which showed smaller top- and front action valved tubas, with recording and upright bells, and then the 34J and 36J, which they said was "what professional tubists use for their recording work". In this catalog, the front-piston tubas were referred to as American models, and the top-piston tubas were called Wonder models, the 36J being referred to as the Wonderphone (!)
