I have a great solution for you - the Kawai GMega is also essentially a "synthesizer without a keyboard" like Art's Yamaha TG100. The big difference is you don't need a MIDI translator to use it - you can go directly from the RS-232C port on your computer to the serial interface port on the GMega. All you need is a simple conversion cable (RS-232) available at any Radio Shack. That gives you 16 channels and 28-voice polphony to play with.
The Kawai retails for $399, but I just HAPPEN to have one for sale on e**y. Check it out - item #2501962230 (man, that was a shameless plug, but I really need a new PT-88!).
