James Jenkins won his first job in Jacksonville with one of those Besson 4V comp F's - borrowed from U of Miami. He and I were the last two finalists for that job. I tooted on his borrowed one at 2:00 in the morning (when they had finally decided to select him). It played great, and at the time I had very little experience with F tubas.
I played one around the same time that belonged to the U of N. Texas. It stayed in its locker all the time because everyone there (including Don L.) thought it a piece of crap. It played well for me with only minor intonation issues (slightly flat 8th partial) and a big clear sound. Later, I played another at the big T.U.B.A shindig
(quite a few years ago) at U of Kentucky...' played the same as the U of N. Texas instrument and the U of Miami instrument - just fine.
