Charlier 36 Etudes (for trumpet)(really difficult... it pushes the limits on the ear, technique, and musicality for a younger player)

Solos... Curnow, Barat, and Clarke come to mind right away. Gordon Jacob Fantasia as well. Morceau Symphonique. If he goes to church, he can practice "The Lords Prayer" and play it during collection or something. It is a good opportunity to get some time in front of people. He'll probably have to order a string part and transpose.
