audition for any job one wants...that you're invited to! No permission is necessary from a current employer. Often (as was the case yesterday, auditions are held on a Monday, because that is the usual day off for most full-time orchestras, and it's easier for people to attend auditions. Contracts usually provide personal days off that can be taken for reasons such as an audition. Otherwise, you can hope that your orchestra is playing Beethoven that week. However, if you're in your first year with an orchestra somewhere and trying to get tenure, it probably doesn't look too good for you to be taking every audition in sight. That's usually not a problem for a tubist.
