You should speak with Iam Bousfield(sp?). He has some great comments on that area. He went from the London Sym to Vienna and was astounded at the difference of playing requirments. He spoke about how auditions in America are just like the playing setting in London: If you miss a note, everyone just stares at you because they don't know how to react.

When he made the switch to Vienna, it was so much more laid back. It wasn't about die-hard technique. Those guys sit in the ensemble and play. They have fun. If someone misses a note, then oh well.

Being a "college boy" myself, I can agree with you that we (as a whole) have been taught to try and be machines and miss NO notes and play like you are the only one out there.
Some of us enjoy playing just to play, though. I think competition is healthy. After all, the level of players in the world today is growing and I feel it is due to stricter competition.
