These are two very different instruments. The King is the quintessential American style tuba IMHO. It is a relatively compact 4/4 sized tuba with a medium to small, 0.687" bore, piston valves and a large bell. The M-W 18 is a small 3/4 sized tuba with rotary valves, a medium sized bell and a larger, 0.748" bore. The main branches and bows of the 18 also seem much smaller than on the King. I like the way the 18 plays, but it can't deliver the breadth of sound that I can get from the King. I was surprised at how easily the M-W 18 that I tried played and I think that it would be a great horn for someone looking for something lightweight to carry around or for a small group, while the King is more of an all around instrument. Just one person's opinion.
