Unless your teacher has only played a Yamaha 641 (*shudders*), his statement isn't necessarily true. I've been able to try out the new King 2341 and it played extremely well for a BBb horn, especially for its price. In general, CC tubas tend to be of a "higher quality" than BBb's, but many manufacturers are closing this gap. The Miraphone 191 and 1291 are said to be some of the best out there, and the VMI piston 3301 (I believe this is the number) supposedly "sounds" like a CC horn. And I have no doubt that "top name, more expensive" manufacturers like Rudy Meinl, Gronitz, Hirsbrunner, and Thein make their BBb's to the same caliber of quality as their CC's.
