I am a band director at a very small, rural school. We do not have a lot of students to go around... so a lot of the kids who do one thing, do several. I have athletes in my program. If my rehearsals were impacting negatively on some big upcoming match, I would tell you to go do the match and leave off my rehearsals for a time. I would gladly sit down with any of my students' coaches and discuss how we can best serve the interests of the kid (and thus our own interests). Academic Bowl practice, cheerleading, basketball, football, soccer, golf... and band can co-exist. I would hope that if you talked to your band director and ask him to reach out to the coach, this thing could be resoveld and you would not be penalized, or forced out of either program. You might suggest a little extra time, maybe one-on-one soccer time after the all-region/all-state thing is finished.
