With a Conn 40K sitting on a Wenger chair as my favourite BBb set-up I cannot disagree much with your envisions.

However:

With a long-arm microphone stand the direction of the bell is not very important for home-recording purposes.

Should you want to use your brass bass for stage performances, then you should be aware about, that a Wenger chair is not something one just slips easily out of. If you are not a very short person, you will have to lift the bell side of sousaphone body to get access to your seat. (The lack of a back support was not kind to my back. A problem I solved by mounting a 2" wide strap between two of the telescopic tubes supporting he sousaphone. The strap was intended to be a security strap holding wheel chair users during car transports. But anybody can make them out of strong fire-hose type woven fabric and Velcro mounted generously at the ends to enable adjustments).

Actually the Conn factory considered the needs of doublers like you, when the made the 2XJ series. You can read Conn's own material on that topic via the link given below here. You will have to join the Yahoo group in question. You very likely will receive an error message right after having signed up (goes for many browsers). Don't worry, just start out again with the original link as given. That will take you to the right album.
