Aside from being with Joe'S reply, I would not ascribe your experience to the leadpipe mount.

Playing horn in front of the timpanies or the bass drum was a really rotten experience. Those huge membranes emitted sound waves with a lot of energy into them. They simply blew my lips off the mouthpiece.

You have more leverage within the larger frame of a tuba mouthpiece, so you don't get blown off from there. But you certainly can feel the impact, when the incoming loud sound waves interfere with your lips.

In the horn situation the beating guys were placed in front of the horns. In your situation it might be worth experimenting with your relative placement in the rock band set-up.
