I suspect that Brian Bowman keeps turning out successful military musicians in part because the very best musicians who want a career in the military come to him to be taught. I suspect that the success of many of Arnold Jacobs's students stem from the same fact. The best teachers attract the best students, so success should be expected, not attacked.

Of course, one reason I was selected for my current position is the reputation and resume I had amassed over years in this industry. That doesn't mean I didn't have to perform in my interview, or that I don't have to deliver the goods day in and day out. Music is about the only field I've ever heard of where aspirants believe that the interviewers should know nothing about them before (or during) the interview.

But I'd bet that the winner in this case was the superior performer. That is usually the case.
