Admittedly knowing little, I do know that it is a complicated formula that grants one admission to various schools. Of course, if you are going to be a music student your AUDITION matters a great deal, but beyond that:

GPA is only one factor. These colleges and universities are pretty clever. They actually know how to index your GPA according to the high school you've attended...ie. how academically "tough" your particular high school has proven itself to be, whether you were in the "honors" or "AP" programs, etc. (A "Valedictorian" at one school might not rate as academically high as a regular B+ "bloke" at another school.)

Many high school kids don't take much stock in this, but colleges and universities REALLY DO pay attention to extracurricular activities and community service - and how much you were involved in them.

Some stuff that also matters quite a bit is whether you have ancestors (parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents) that attended the school, whether they GAVE $$$$$ to the school over the years, and - of course - your race.
