Cotton's the best, although I've never seen stiff cotton gloves, at least not in terms of fabric stiffness. If they're the right size, and the glove's fingers go all the way to the web of your hand, they should feel fine. Have a couple pairs handy, and wash out a pair once in a while -- you can even just wash them in the sink with soap & water (wear 'em, and it's just like washing your hands) and they'll come out fine.

Lycra will scratch the finish, as will most synthetics (certain microfiber cloths should be okayÉ see thread below). Gloves with little rubber grip-enhancing nubbins aren't as good for the finish as plain 100% cotton gloves, but they're not awful, either.

And if someone decides to make fun of your choice to use gloves, just smile and know that you won't be stuck spending an evening every month polishing your tuba.
