"Modeern design"..... hog wash. Material improvements (monel for pistons) is a modern design. Much of the rest is just fashion. Different sounds for different circumstances perhaps, but not objectively better. The leadpipe theory is on of those trendy bits waved about to lend an aura of scientific credibility to what is still a discipline in search of a very elusive goal; the creating of the perfect musical instrument. Were it all objectively knowable the Yamaha instruments would incorporate those elements and be the worldwide runaway price and performance favorites. That they aren't merely demonstrates that imstrument design is still an art. As an aside, flugelhorns seem to make out with a pretty fair tone with the tuning slide about as ostentatiously in the leadpipe as you can get.
Inflammatorily yours- Henry
