The Fender Precision is a good bass, and many people play on it. It has a great fat sound that really fills out a group. Personally, I prefer the Jazz bass because it has more tonal options right on the bass, whereas with the Precision a lot of that has to come from the amp. The Peavey amp should serve you well, and this sounds like a good set-up if you want to, as you put it, "mess around" on the bass. The bass will be able to stand it if you end up getting more serious, but the amp will probably have to be replaced, but until then, this sounds like a very good set-up. Best of luck with the endeavour.
