There is more to the difference between an active and a passive bass than a battery. Most passive tone controls are nothing more than a variable treble-cut knob. Active tone controls usually allow at least bass & treble cut/boost, and many have midrange cut/boost with variable center points. Some current models of the Precision have nice active systems.
That said, there's nothing wrong with the sound of a passive Precision. In fact, it's hard to beat. Also, there's something to be said about not having to worry whether or not a battery will die on you at a gig.
With CBS era Precisions, watch the neck for warping and excessive fret wear; it's a common problem. Replacement of the pots may be a good idea, also.
