The woman with the "snow shovel" is Cynthia Phelps. I have had the pleasure of hearing her as a soloist, clinician, and chamber player. She is a wonderful musician and a very personable individual. You can hear some snippets of her playing at the Cala Records site shown below. By the way, the next time you are struggling with a really difficult orchestral tuba excerpt, pick up a score to any Brahms symphony and check out the string parts. Sometimes a little perspective can be good for us all.
I am in no way implying that Allison was "dissing" Ms. Phelps with her comment. I'm just saying that a little cross-sectional appreciation is a good thing. Believe it or not, there is some fine musicianship that occurs among non-brass players, too.
