Mr. Torchinsky doesn't believe the "Donatelli was too fat" story, but then he was a peer of Mr. Jacobs, so he's allowed to disagree. He studied with Donatelli too, so was in a good position to notice how fat he was. Donatelli didn't have the "tone pit" many modern performers with large tubas have. He played a Conn after he sold the York. One of Bob Rusk, Paul Krzywicki, Winston Morris, Don Harry, etc.'s classmates at IU bought a horn from Donatelli's widow. Might have been the same horn. Fred Marzan told me that the bass professor at Eastman had a "Donatelli model Conn" in his studio. Fred tried to buy it from him with no success. there's no "Donatelli model" in the Conn catalog.
