the other notes you hear (there are actually two when you sing a major sixth -- listen closely, you'll hear the notes in octaves) are the sum of and difference between the two frequencies you are actually producing. it's the same phenomenon that produces "beats" when you are out of tune. it is not in any way tuba-specific; you might not have been in tune or singing loudly enough when you tried it on another horn.

There are a lot of interesting combinations that can pop out, and the major sixth is one of my favorites. It creates a major chord in second inversion, which you can parallel endlessly, and still have good 18th Century voice leading!
