This may sound like something that won't work, but I have "un-stuffed" some small-bore tubas by pairing them with shallow-cupped mouthpieces with large throats. The only trade-off is a little more "sizzle" and less "smokiness" in the sound, but in my opinion, the Conn could stand to have the "treble knob" (clarity) turned up a bit, anyway. Try a #69C4 mouthpiece from Schilke, but order it with a "custom" .312" (or so) throat size. (This is a much larger throat hole that the standard throat on their #69C4.) This is about the cheapest way that I know of to get a mouthpiece like this. What I am defining is a copy of the Mirafone Rose "Solo" mouthpiece.

Disclaimer: I am not a Conn tuba expert, nor do I play one on T.V.
