If you want to see some in action check out the movie/video "Brassed Off" about a colliery (sp?), that's a coal mine, band in Yorkshire. If nothing else, you get a pretty fair sampling of some rather okay brass band music and a pretty fair story. You can find it at Amazon.com (I was going to include the link but they're offline at the moment.) by searching for "Brassed Off". That will get you to the video/DVD and the soundtrack.
