Actually, it seems fairly reasonable for mouthpiece (or BERP) practice to help tone. Arnold Jacobs used to practice with an embouchre visualizer all the time, working to get a lot of 'buzz' in his tone. I personally have been working on buzzing pieces on my mouthpieces, not only to develop intonation and accuracy, but to try to get a lot of resonance in my sound. When you're only playing on a mouthpiece, the horn stimulus is taken out, and you've really got nothing but the your lips, lungs, and the music. It's beginning to really help my lower register.
Comments, disagreements?
