Al, There has been some good advice given to you, but I would suggest you go and find examples of all the horns mentioned and blow them for yourself. This may be difficult but it is worth it in the long run. When I was a student I bought the first large CC tuba I tried and found out later that this was mistake. Also if you can scrape together the money I would suggest going to Germany to the factories and purchasing a horn there (B&S, Melton, and Rudolph Meinl are all very close to each other) it may work out cheaper than purchasing from a retailer in the US (I guess thats where you are from). Also while your there have lessons off some European tuba players, this may give you another perspective that you may find useful when you begin auditioning etc.(neither is better, just different). Happy hunting!
