Actually, the oboe begins "Bb-C-Ab-low Ab-Eb" and the tuba plays a completely different pattern. After the oboe (representing the human technicians' signals) repeats the pattern several times, and the tuba (alien ship) plays something else, we finally hear:

Oboe: "Bb-C-Ab..."

And the tuba answers, fortissississississimo:

"LOW A-FLAT--E-FLAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Then there is a brief segment of the oboe and tuba in octaves, followed by a more and more complex exchange...er...conversation between the oboe and the tuba(s).

Hmmm, as I proofread this followup, I'm feeling rather silly about posting it...
