"French tuba" refers to a 6-valved horn pitched in C, one octave above our CC contrabass tubas. There is a viewpoint that this is the horn that Ravel had in mind when orchestrating Bydlo, which would be quite a different sound (and technique) than playing it on a lower-pitched horn.
