You're absolutely right. My brain was in modern-day mode when I replied. If I'd have thought it through I would have come to the conclusion you did. Maybe they should start making ophicleids again for pieces such as these. Do you know of anyone who plays ophicleid on pieces written for it? Just an idea. Those groups who play on "period instruments" really do a great service to keep us from distorting compositions.
