Asking why is kind of like asking why you prefer red over blue. You just do. In my case, my desire was to have different sounds to use as I see fit, kind of like different paints for the painter. I don't think it generally has to do with shortcomings in current equipment, which I know wasn't the issue in my case, but there may be some players who switch for those reasons. I also don't think you'll find that one type of sound is better or worse in the various applications than another. Both of these designs have been incarnated in anything from 3/4 to 6/4 size instruments and I think that has more impact on the utility of a horn than the sound concept.

My opinion for what its worth...
