Kevin,
Recently we sold a VERY handsome Buescher 3 + 1 euphonium on eBay for a pretty fancy price. It was made around 1905. It was dent-free, but we PLATED OVER the original silver (satin silver) to cover the small places that were worn through to brass. It turned out beautifully: NO stripping.

When we have Bach Stradivarius trumpets re-silvered for sale, we always polish the ORIGINAL silver (the silver that remains, as long as it is bonded well to the base metal) and have them plate right over the old silver with new silver. This is MUCH gentler on the instruments. Stripping is pretty "rough" on an instrument, because it severely etches the base metal...PARTICULARLY any nickel-silver parts.

Why not quit freakin' out over the tarnish, finish, and imperfections and PLAY that thang?...

...It's a LOT more fun than lookin' at it.
