At the New York Brass conference this spring there were two Kanstul piston tubas: one in CC and one BBb. Both were very small instruments, with very small bore. One of them had a screw-rim bell. They played surprisingly well, considering their size. But the valve arrangement was very disapointing to me. It was similar to the yamaha 620 series, the new Pat Sheridan Bessons, and the Jupiter front-action tubas, which require the player to hold his or her right hand in an awkward position, similar to a Fender Bass player's. (The wrist must bend sharply downward in order to reach the valve caps, leading to carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.) Does ANYBODY know why so many manufacturers do that to us? As far as I know, Meinl Weston and Weril are the only companies that have given any thought to sensible hand position in recent years.
