Competition:
Twenty years ago 60 people raised their hands for my regional orchestra's audition.
Today, smaller-budgeted orchestras have hundreds.

As far as academia, unfortunately more tenured music profs feel pressure to keep the department funded than ever before, sometimes this can be as blatant as the average art school-when's the last time you saw a roomful of painters or sculptors who had uniformly high levels of talent? The best studios in the country will always have good people with the juice to get their bills paid, but most colleges and universities already are suffering.

Ability to make a living, well as even "an average musician" today, you still hafta be better at your trade than the average Java-script guru, yet who makes the bucks?

More on $$ and music's place in society... if you are concerned about live performance,
then consider that you guys hustling to pony up 2 or three bills for some CDs
of PJBE are just a part of the game now. 50-years ago, it was jukeboxes. The difference
now though, is EVERYone seems to have more CD's than they can listen to in a year, and spends more on collecting CD's than they do on attending live performances.
