I guess that competitive relates mainly to Arizona. Teaching salaries range a great deal across the country, and the AZ legislature has not done much in the past 10 years to help us keep up. That may change with a vote in November.
Anyway, starting salary--BA, no experience, no extras--is $26,000. Top is around $50K. One consideration is cost of living. Phoenix is about average, with very affordable housing. Also, you don't shovel the heat--save on clothes, no mildew, and most bugs burn up in the atmosphere. Raise money for that band trip by washing cars--they dry instantly in the heat. Marching bands in September wear gloves and shorts.Fiberglass sousaphones prevent burns!
Meanwhile, I've got a blue-eyed 11 year old genius baritone player who needs a band teacher! Call the district at (602) 707-2000. Tell them you want to talk to the Curriculum Director or the Personnel Tech about the openings for band. They are the experts, and willing to talk about salary and other options.
