My first 'serious' teacher drilled the word 'TOE' into me. Every note was played with the syllable of 'TOE'. Makes for a strong attack and keeps the throat open. He would sing or even shout 'TOE TOE TOE' on each note as I would play it. 'TAH' is also sometimes used. Perhaps this would help.
P.S. My 2 1/2 month old son grunts in a similar fashion every time he moves his bowels. I doubt there is any relation to your student's problem, though.
