I second your sentiments about playing musicals. When I was in college, I had some of the best times playing with a community theater troup that did 4 musicals per year. I remember one year we did "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum...", "Fiddler on the Roof", and "West Side Story". The great thing about this was that I didn't play the tuba book, if there was one. I always played the bass book, on my tuba, which was infinitely more fun. The conductor was an amateur tuba player and he always let me play out so it was really fun. He actually came up with the idea of using tuba instead of string/electric bass because the pit we played in was enclosed. No string bass could ever project enough in that kind of situation so they would amplify the rest of the pit orchestra, all except me. I'll never forget some of those passages in the Bernstein...
