Just wanted to pass that Tuba playing is alive and well in the great state of Hawaii. Saturday, at Calvary-by-the-Sea Lutheran church, there was a mixed military brass and local artist concert that was most impressive. There was a wide array of solos, quintet, and other ensemble pieces. The one that stuck in my throat was the playing of Dave Roberts (retired Tuba player, now a Navy Officer stationed here). He did the Tomasi (To be or Not to be) thing with a military mixed trombone quartet. For a guy who doesn't play much anymore, he was unbelievable. He used a cut/modified Conn 34J grand symphony 5 piston horn. Talked to him afterwards, nice guy. Plan to take a few lessons from him before I go to college this fall. I guess there's more in Hawaii than just Ukeleles.
