Altieri bags are not "cheep". I own four of 'em and the only thing cheap about them is the pricetag. I've not found a more durable bag than the Altieri. And any gig bag is not going to protect your horn if you drop it. Gig bags aren't designed to do that. If your aim is to always protect your horn, at the expense of convenience, don't buy any gig bag and use a hard case, just like you said. But Donna Altieri makes a great bag and she'll make it exactly the way you want it for a very reasonable price. The Altieri bag protects a tuba just as well as any bag out there. What more could you want?
