I think the official literature is correct, but the boundaries between the two concepts aren't so distinct.
My PT-48 is what I would call a hybrid. It is a somewhat cup-shaped funnel. Or a funnel-shaped cup. The funnel-shaped Doug Elliott T cup that I use on another instrument is FAR deeper than the PT-48. The Conn Helleberg is also deeper, but by not so great a margin.
