I think you are on to something. There is a German sound, I believe, which I heard in Germany while listening to Germans play their native music. And, they sounded that way whether they were playing an Alexander, a Yamaha, or a King sousaphone. And, as music is the international language, various dialects can be learned. There is an American over there that successfully plays in a German opera orchestra on his Boosey & Hawkes EEb. When applying for the position, he was told that he needed to play F tuba as is customary. He used his Anglo-Saxon EEb, and decided if they couldn't hear the difference, he wasn't going to tell them. I think that the sound you produce can be culturally affected, but is mostly a factor of the player, more than the tubes in his hands. My $.02.
